Year 10 GCSE English
Year 10
Examination results matter. They open doors, They stay with us for life.
- We understand this and specifically teach not only so that your child understands the importance of English in the world around them, but so that they leave their secondary education with the best possible grades in English, and with no regrets.
- We are unapologetically aspirational with every child we teach. We truly believe with a combination of the right work ethic, attitude to learn and guidance from us, your child will excel and exceed their own target grade.
- For GCSE English we teach all exam boards, with our most popular being the AQA board. Our teachers who lead the GCSE classes all have a wealth of experience of examining and are therefore able to identify and warn students of the common errors we see. Our teaching stems from assessment objectives and the mark schemes; as examiners, we are fully aware and brimming with confidence with regard to how to teach to achieve exam success.
- Staying true to the GCSE course, we teach language and literature separately; when it comes to literature, your child will be in classes based on which texts they are studying.
- We teach key reading skills across both language and literature such as: literal and inferential comprehension; critical reading; analysis of language, structure, and the writers’ methods; effective essay writing; strategies for reading unseen poetry, exploring plot, context, character, theme, the writer’s purpose and the writer’s ideas.
- We also teach GCSE specific creative writing skills linked to descriptive, narrative, and transactional writing e.g.: writing to argue, persuade or advise. Students are given regular opportunities to write at length and enhance their skills in AO5 and AO6.
We teach all set texts- examples of some set texts:
Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice, Much Ado About Nothing and Julius Caesar.
19th Century literature: A Christmas Carol, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, Pride and Prejudice and The Sign of Four.
Modern Texts: An Inspector Calls, Blood Brothers, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, and many others texts.
Poetry: Love and Relationships and Power and Conflict anthologies.
