Year 5 English
Year 5
Year 5
- Year 5 is a crucial year for 11+ preparation.
- We continue to build upon the skills we taught in Year 4, but in Year 5 our key focus is transference and application of these skills to exam papers.
- In lessons, we continue to emphasise students’ enjoyment and understanding of language, especially vocabulary to support their reading and writing.
- We heavily focus on exam technique in creative writing and reading comprehension.
- Students are introduced to a range of age appropriate classics and a range of reading material in the form of extracts, plays, news articles, Shakespeare, poetry and 19th century literature.
- In addition to academic teaching in English, we also offer wellbeing support and coaching to both parents and students to help manage the pressure of impending examinations.
- Our approach to teaching 11+ English is very much skills based, which is why our students succeed. We do not just teach to the exam, but ensure a solid understanding of our subject first, this gives a stronger foundation to then build upon and succeed.
- Many of our 11+ students successfully get into schools of their choice- many succeed in all their exams and have the difficult decision of then having to choose which school to accept, and which to decline!
Examples of schools our students have previously gained a place in: Haberdashers, North London Collegiate School, City of London Girls, Henrietta Barnet, Latymer School, The Tiffin Girls’ School, QE Boys’ School and Nonsuch High School for Girls- these are just a few!
